Island Life

How to enjoy the Mallorca Island Lifestyle

The Oasis “Villa Verde” is located on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Sencelles.

The town has strong agricultural roots and is considered part of the island called “Es Pla” which translates to “flatlands”. The main square with the Moorish architecture and church often hosts displays of local traditions and festivities. Even when no events are taking place, the local café ‘Ca´n Paris´is the perfect spot to have a cup of coffee and absorb the peace of rural life.

The surrounding villages of Sineu, Binissalem and Santa Maria also have many interesting things to offer.

Sineu is considered the heart of the island and hosts the biggest market every Wednesday. There you can find local food and produce, handcrafted artisanal goods and variety of other products. The Santa Maria market takes place every Saturday morning and apart from the many different stalls you can also see the local livestock!

Binissalem is perhaps the most famous of the three due to its fruitful vinyards and rich wine production. The famous Macia Batle and Jose L. Ferrer bodegas are located in this region, which makes this town the perfect place to go for winetasting or drinks and dinner.

This part of the island is sure to get you in touch with the local customs and is ideal for anybody that enjoys rural life, cycling, hiking, horseback riding or simply reading a book and enjoying the sunshine!

If sea and sun is what you are looking for, the paradisiac beach of ‘Es Trenc’ is only a 20-minute car ride away. There you can experience soft white sand and turquoise crystalline waters to really get into the island vibe.

No trip to Mallorca would be complete without a visit to the city center. The grandiose Cathedral is a historical landmark worth visiting as is the old town that surrounds it which has remained intact since the 13th century.

With plenty of boutiques, restaurants, cafés and bars the possibilities of an unforgettable outing are endless.

Fairs, Festivals and Markets

The people of Sencelles worship Saint Agatha as their patron saint, whose feast day is February 5, although there is a great vocation to the local Blessed Sister Francinaina Cirer, beatified in 1989 and founder of the order of the Sisters of Charity, a congregation dedicated to the poor and sick, whose feast day is celebrated on February 27.

Spring is synonymous with festivities in Sencelles, as on the second Sunday of May the villagers participate in the ‘Romeria de sa casa Blanca’ (a pilgramage), either on foot, on horseback or by carriage, following the tradition.

The following week, coinciding with the third Sunday of May, is the ‘Fira Major’, an event to show the rural past of the village which is followed by the Monday of ‘Firó’, a smaller but very established event.

Returning to agricultural reminiscences, the month of August hosts the ‘Embala’t’, a celebration that recalls the ancient festival of the harvest, an important moment in the rural life of the ancestors of Sencelles.
